The leisure centre – 134 m2 sports hall

The leisure centre required a fast, cost-effective refresh of its 134 m2 sports hall after the existing lacquer and line markings began to wear, but it could not be closed long enough for a full sand and refinish.

After adhesion testing revealed that the existing unknown lacquer would not accept a direct overcoat, a PALLMANN system was chosen, with cleaning utilising PALLMANN Clean Strong, PALL-X 350 primer, and PALL-X 98 lacquer. A focused programme of repairs, selective re-line marking and simultaneous priming and lacquering delivered a durable, high-quality finish within the week, minimising disruption and cost.

The Challenge

The leisure centre’s floor lacquer and line markings were showing clear signs of wear, and the surface required repair work. However, the centre could not be closed for the duration required for a complete sanding, reline marking and finishing. The existing lacquer was very smooth and unusually tough. Its formulation was unknown and therefore could not be safely overcoated without risking future peeling.

A trial was carried out using a sample board provided by the leisure centre. The test showed that the existing lacquer would not accept a direct lacquer overcoat, but PALL-X 350 bonded successfully to the sample. As a result, PALL-X 350 was selected as the primer and adhering agent, with PALL-X 98 used as the overcoat.

Solution

The chosen solution combined targeted repairs with a tested PALLMANN coating system to deliver a fast, durable renewal without a full sand and refinish. After completing the necessary repairs, the team deep-cleaned and buffed the 1,340 m² hall using PALLMANN Clean Strong to achieve a clean surface. They then applied PALL‑X 350 as an adhesion primer after successful bonding tests on the existing lacquer.

Only the actively used line markings were repainted. To manage the 1-4-hour overcoat window for PALL X 350 across such a large area, operatives worked in parallel, priming for 2 hours, then switching to lacquer once dry. Starting in rows with PALL‑X 98 using 18” nylon rollers, pausing priming 2 hours before shift end so lacquering could catch up and continue the same routine the next day. This resulted in a high-performance finish with minimal downtime and significant cost savings.

Conclusion

By tailoring the work sequence and using tested PALLMANN systems, the project delivered a robust and long-lasting finish within a tight timeframe and budget. The chosen maintenance route, rather than a full refurbishment, allowed the leisure centre to stay operational with minimal interruption while achieving a high-quality result.
